Okay, this is kind of a rant, so if you’re not in the mood, you might want to skip this post.
I do wish people would learn to listen, especially when large numbers of dollars are on the line. I mean, with big money on the line you’d think they would, wouldn’t you? But apparently not.
For the last couple of weeks I’ve been doing a project budget. For a year now I’ve been telling the customer that they wanted more than their stated budget could afford. They started out right at the top, and then kept adding, ignoring my warnings that addition after addition was adding up. Then, this week, when I sent them the first cut, they went ballistic and ranted on and on about everything from my shoe size to my eye color (figuratively speaking).
The tempting response was to go through email by email and point out the warning signs. But that probably would have just blown things up completely. Over the years I’ve learned that a) people who don’t listen don’t like to have it pointed out to them, they’d rather blame everyone else for their inattention, and b) when the victim is let loose the ears are closed. They wanna be victims, period.
I’ve managed to pull it together again and salvage the job, but jeez! Hello!
